Jason was only gone for three days this time, but I still hated every minute. I love that I long for my husband to be with me still. Fortunately, I have the kids to distract and entertain me most of the time. Unfortunately, one of the days, they were too.
I needed something to occupy my time and cleaning the house was not going to cut it. I’ve been watching what I eat for the last few months trying to get back to my pre-wedding body and I’ve done pretty well. I’ve lost 30 pounds, but have about 30 more to go. Yeah, that’s what happens when you marry a foodie.
Up until about a year ago, I got my nails done monthly with acrylic tips because I love the look and it makes me feel pretty. Ladies, you know what I mean, right? Well, it just wasn’t in our budget at the time so I stopped. My nails were a hot mess I tell you. It took several months for my nails to recuperate and even now I can’t get them to look pretty enough to just paint.
So what does this frugal lady do? I google ‘acrylic tip tutorial’ and buy a diy kit. I picked up the Beauty Secrets 4 in 1 Acrylic Extension System at Sally’s Beauty Supply. It was just under $20. I also picked up a #8 nail brush since the one in the kit was really short. I knew it would be a challenge trying to do my own nails, let alone with a tiny brush.
I watched several more diy tutorials, including one specifically with this kit before I made my first attempt. Needless to say, my first attempt was not pretty. Sorry, but I did not take pictures. Lets just say my right hand nails looked a little more like Mt. Everest than the great plains.
I filed them down as best as I could with the old nail files I had laying around. They would suffice for the time being. After a coat of polish, I was more than pleased with my first attempt. I definitely needed to practice though. A lot. I guess it’s a good thing I have three girls, right?
The next night we were in bed watching TV. I’m a little ADD so I decided I’d give my nails some more attention. I started filing them down a bit more to smooth out the surface. Filing with out that little machine they use a the salon is time consuming. I also learned that my cuticles don’t like it when they get filed. However, by the time I was done, they looked great! I couldn’t believe how good they looked. I was hooked. No more salons for this girl. I can’t believe I was paying upwards of $40 to have someone else make my nails pretty. I have to admit, I never enjoyed the time getting my nails done. I always went alone. Most of the time the technicians were speaking in their native tongue so I didn’t understand them anyway. Even when they were speaking English to me, I felt like they were patronizing me. Tell me I’m not alone in this feeling.
That first round lasted about two weeks. All but one thumb nail had to be removed or redone(I didn’t have the time to redo them so I actually just took them off). I left the thumb nail on until it needed to be removed just so I could see how long I could get them to last if I perfected the process. Believe it or not, it lasted for just over a month!
So, if you are a DIYer and get your nails done regularly, I highly recommend giving it a go on your own. You will save a ton of money and feel even more accomplished in the process!
